The Dystopian Reader's Starter Pack
My top five dystopian romance reads of 2026 — from class-system slow burns to forced-marriage enemies-to-lovers.

I am totally in my dystopian era this year. It's hard not to be with some of the bangers some authors have been putting out this year. In 2026 I have narrowed down my favorites to the top five dystopian romance books out there.
Because I Killed Him by Edith Birde
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is a long one, but it is well worth the time you dedicate to reading this literary masterpiece. We have a class system and each group is identified by a color. The blues are the top dogs and at the top of the hierarchy. Other groups are the purples, the greens, and the oranges, each class has a different strength much like we saw in the divergent series. This is a dark academia, dystopian romance book. A big portion of the plot is the character development and the slow burn romance. It ends on a cliffhanger with a betrayal, and I cannot wait to continue this series.
Conform by Ariel Sullivan
This book was fantastic. The setting is typical of most dystopian literary works. Something catastrophic, and apocalyptic happened that decimated humanity. Now society is ruled by a technologically superior group called the Illum. Due to the apocalyptic event, the human population is struggling. This is where the Handmaid's Tale vibe comes into the plot. The Illum mandates procreation contracts. And as you can probably guess, the FMC, Emeline, is forced into one of the contracts with a member of the Illum. The story progresses through the courting phase between these two and an unexpected potential love triangle ensues with another side character. Rife with secrets and plot twists, this dystopian romance was easily five stars for me.
Rose in Chains by Julie Soto
This dystopian romance has both aspects of dystopian society as well as magic, categorizing it as both a dystopian and romantasy read. This book was amazing and I devoured every page. Like with the other book, this book begins with the outcome of a war and the fall of a kingdom. The FMC, Briony, is a princess in the fallen kingdom and is sold at an auction after it falls. Not only is her pedigree sought after but also her uncommon magic. The first plot twist in this literary work is that the MMC, Toven, and Briony have a riddled history from childhood. That comes to influence the story throughout the book. This is a fantastic enemies to lovers is full of mystery, secrets, betrayal, and page turning.
Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe
Daggermouth was all of the talk amongst Instagram, and booktok. Lately it has stirred some chatter on social media platforms due to an article accusing the author of utilizing AI to write the book. My opinion… read the damn book. The article was scanned with evidence and honestly, it is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. A true enemies to lovers that we still question going into the sequel. A forced marriage, forced proximity, secrets, a rebellion, heartbreak, and all the feels.
Firstborn by M.J. Hastings
First born isn't due for release until September 1 but trust me you want this on your TBR immediately. The book opens with explaining society's motto: The first children take up arms. The second children take up books. And the third children are taken. Bryn is our FMC. She's a first child who enters a competition called The Long Trial. Either you unalive someone or you face exile. But as she progresses through the trial, she uncovers a secret plot to kidnap her younger sister. Our sworn enemy MMC then enters the chat as Brynn is forced to team up with him to uncover the plot. This book ended on an amazing cliffhanger and I can't wait for others to read this book and continue with the series.
